Many of us thought that the 2A school from Gatlinburg would roll into SOR and walk away with a win in the first ever meeting between the two teams. However, the boys from the south put on an offensive performance as they toasted Gatlinburg-Pittman 42-28.
G-P opened the game on offense and quickly put one in the end zone to take an early, 7-0 lead. Midway would be forced to punt on their first possession but G-P muffed the punt and Llye recovered, giving the Waves great field possession. The senior, Daniel “The Highlight Reel” Bredwell, had a great game and definitely played as it were his last game. Bredwell would take the handoff and bounce it outside and scorched it up the sidelines for Midway’s first TD. Tanner would add the PAT. Tanner would go a perfect 6-6 on the night.
Bad luck struck G-P again as they then muffed the kickoff and the freshman, Gary Teffeteller, recovered for the Green team and would again give Midway great field possession. #9 Bredwell again got the call and punched in his 2nd TD of the night, giving the Waves a 14-7 lead. Bredwell almost had a 3rd TD on the night but fumbled the ball just shy of the goal line; however the ball took a favorable bounce right into the hands of Sam “I Am” Stansbury for a TD. Normally when the big men luck up and get a TD you could expect some type of dance, maybe a little strut or finger wave, but nothing from Sam. The senior simply tossed the ball to the ref as if he’d been there many times before.
Woody threw the ball well also. He hit several receivers as well as his tight end Matt Campbell for some key first downs and hit Lloyd on a fade route for a touchdown.
From then on the Waves dominated. The Waves’ offensive line was blowing the defense off the ball. The running game was the best I’d seen all season. Bredwell owned the 1st half and in the 2nd half, G-P got a strong dose of Ray-Ray Robinson as he pounded the ball for 4, 5, 6 yards per carry as well as a touchdown.
And of course superman himself, Seth Llye, had another great game. Big rushes, big receptions, fumble recoveries, and even a sack.
It was a great night for Midway football. They ended the regular season on a big note and have a lot of momentum to carry into the playoffs.
