Lady Waves Lose-Waves Win Close One

The Lady Waves, coming off back-to-back wins the week prior, faced two of the best teams this week and were handed back-to-back losses.

On Tuesday, the Lady Waves traveled to Oakdale and we on the losing end of a 30-54 match-up. On Thursday things didn’t get any easier as Coalfield traveled south. The Lady Jackets put on an exhibition on speed and defense as they would cruise to a 60-19 win over the Lady Waves.

Against Coalfield, the Lady Waves’ hardest task was simply getting the ball inbounds and across half court. Coalfield’s speed and aggressiveness on defensive frustrated Midway and forced turnover after turnover. Coalfield had speed and size on their side and it looked bad early for the Lady Waves.

The Lady Waves will get a week off before they face Bledsoe Co in the first round of the Christmas Tournament beginning on December 28th.

Boys Game
This was a match-up everyone was looking forward to. Sure, it’s on the hardwood rather than the gridiron but it’s clear the rivalry between Coalfield and Midway is growing tremendously in every sport and is now equal to the rivalry between the Greenwaves and Greenback.

Oddly enough, Coalfield came to SOR looking for their first win of the season and the Greenwaves were just looking to put the loss to Oakdale earlier in the week behind them. The Jackets came into the game winless….and that’s exactly how they would leave. The Greenwaves pulled out another close one, winning 40-37.

The Greenwaves came out early and took control of the game but as with all rivalries, Coalfield came back and with 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, took their first lead of the game 27-26.

The Greenwaves went cold in the 3rd quarter. They got raddled and careless with the ball and the momentum shifted to Coalfield. But no fear………we got the Midway Maniacs.

The Maniacs breathed new life into the Greenwaves and the Midway D started tightening up forcing turnovers. Coalfield shot themselves in the foot as they began to freeze the ball with only a slim lead. This totally took them out of their offense and allowed the Greenwaves to regain the momentum, the lead, and the win.

The game remained extremely close in the final 60 seconds…..too close actually. The Greenwaves had a chance to put the game out of reach as they made frequent trips to the charity strip but were unable to hit, ain’t that right AP? C’mon now and say it with me…elbow in…….”release, rotation, splash”.

Jeremy Woody was on the bench in street clothes as he is nursing a twisted ankle that he suffered in the Oakdale game. Woody is listed as DTD.

Midway will play Monterey in the 1st round of the Christmas Tournament.
