It was a game the Green Wave seniors have longed for. It was a chance to redeem last years disappointing playoff loss on that same field.
You could sense it from the start of the game..the confidence on the Green Wave sidelines was unlike anything in recent years. The Waves went into the game expecting nothing less than a blow out and that’s exactly what they got. The Green Waves traveled up to bituminous top mountain and blasted it for 43 points as they completely dominated every aspect of the game, leaving with a 43-21 win.
The Midway offense executed perfectly; the Midway defense was relentless. It was a true reflection of the players’ abilities, their passion for SOR football, and the dedication of the coaching staff.
Ray Robinson started the night off in a big way as he would shed tacklers on his way to a 45 yard touch down run to give the Waves the early 7-0 lead with 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter. The Yellow Jackets would quickly answer with 7 points on a big TD run of their own.
However, Eric Stansbury would take the ensuing kickoff all the way to mid-field to set up great field position. He would later score to put the Waves back on top, 14-7, early in the 2nd quarter.
The Midway defense then put Coalfield on ice. The Yellow Jackets managed only 1 (that I can remember) 1st down in the first half.
What happened next should be seen on ESPN Sports Center. Ray Ray showed off his dance moves for the Coalfield defense. The full back looked like Barry Sanders, and made would-be tacklers look like complete idiots. He delighted the Midway fence walkers with a little spin-move here, a swivel-hip move there, for 30+ yards before being tackled. Harley Davidson would finish off the series with a trip to the dance floor to put the Waves up 20-7.
And to add to Coalfield’s misery, Stansbury would take the mishandled snap on the PAT and run it in, untouched, for a 2-point conversion.
Stansbury would later rush for a touch down to put the Waves up 29-7 at the half.
Wait. Don’t leave yet. The game is still early.
The Waves would get the ball to start the 2nd half. On the first play from scrimmage, QB Eric Stansbury would be sacked for a 15 yard loss on what appeared to be some confusion with the snap or play call. However, start up the video camera because you’re about to see another highlight on this young mans resume. Ray Robinson would take the handoff on the next play and take it 85 yards, all the way to the dance floor. 36-7 Green Team.
Harley Davidson would score for a 2nd time to put the Waves up 43-7 before the Midway starters handed the reigns over to the underclassmen.
Coalfield would score twice late in the 4th quarter and the game ended with a score of 43-21.
Ray Robinson rushed for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns. QB Eric Stansbury rushed for 65 yards, 2 TD’s, and a 2-point conversion. Davidson had 71 yards rushing and 2 TD’s.
With nearly 350 yards on the rushing, the big men up front moved some folks off the ball. Ashton Chinn had another solid game, as did Neo and Hargis.
Steven Blasko had a great game at end and Matt Oliver looked good after having missed the Rockwood game. As always, Chris Barry brought the excitement and had some big plays of his own. Tyler Stockton and the linebacker core completely erased Coalfield’s run game.
The kicking game was solid yet again as Mark Childers was perfect at putting the ball between the uprights.
Congrat’s to the Midway Green Waves on a big district win.
Next week the Waves will host Sequatchie County for homecoming.
