The Midway Green Waves’ historical season comes to an end via a very good Hampton Bulldog team.
Hampton basically beat the Waves at their own game, solid defense and a quick yet powerful running attack.
It remained close through 2 quarters but the Bulldogs were simply the better team on this night, pulling away to a 42-14 victory.
Hampton started the game on offense but the Green Waves offense quickly took the field after a Hampton fumble. But the celebration didn’t last long as the Hampton defense stepped up and scored the first points of the game on an interception returned for a touch down.
Catch the Raven Nevermore; Will Poe took flight on the ensuing kick-off and went 93 yards for a touch down to tie the game at 7-7.
The Hampton Bulldogs would put together an impressive scoring drive to reclaim the lead 14-7. But yet again, the Waves quickly responded with a halfback pass from Ray Robinson to receiver turned QB turned receiver, Eric Stansbury, for a touchdown to again tie the game at 14-14 early in the 2nd quarter.
Still in the first half, the Bulldogs would score twice more to push the lead out to 28-14. With less than two minutes to go in the half, Coach Mo’s Green Waves put together a nice drive and nearly scored again, but time expired leaving the Waves 4 yards shy of a touch down.
At the half we visited with Midway fanatic, Dora the Explorer guru, and pick panel member – Ralton Emory, to get his thoughts on the game. Click here to listen to the interview.
The Waves appeared to have ran out of gas on that last drive and the 2nd half was all Hampton.
Unable to be a threat passing the ball, the running game was Midway’s only weapon; a weapon that the Hampton defense could devote all 11 guys to.
Though I know they are devastated with the loss, this team should be proud of what they have accomplished this season. They set new school records, brought even more sense of pride to the South of the River community, and delighted the fans every Friday night.
Speaking of the fans; to put it bluntly, this team put butts in the seats and made finding a spot on the fence nearly impossible for 13 weeks. Not often will you see such a large crowd of individuals who have no family members playing, drive three hours on a Friday night to watch a football game in 30 degree weather. A special thank you goes out to the seniors for giving us several years of great football.
Again, congratulations to the Midway Green Waves on a spectacular 2007 season.
