They call him “Sugar,” but Midway’s Ray Robinson was anything but sweet for opposing defenses this season as the Green Wave junior RB rushed for 1,800 yards and 22 TDs in helping lead Craig Moser’s squad to the Region 2-A championship and a school record 11 wins.

Robinson’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed as the coaches in Region 2-A recently picked him as the Region 2-A Player of the Year.

“Ray’s really worked hard this season and it’s good to see that his hard work has been rewarded,” Midway head coach Craig Moser said. “Ray’s a good kid too and I think he’s very deserving of the award.”

Moser also received a big award as his fellow coaches named him the Region 2-A Coach of the Year for guiding his team to the TSSAA Class A Quarterfinals.

Robinson and Moser, however, aren’t the only Green Wave players to walk away with hardware as Eric Stansbury, Ashton Chinn and Will Poe also received superlative awards.
Stansbury received the Offensive Player of the Year award after rushing for 698 yards and 20 TDs, passing for 562 yards and 3 TDs, and after breaking his wrist in the playoffs, Stansbury even caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Robinson. Counting defense and special teams, Stans-bury scored a county-high 148 points this season.

Chinn was named as the Region 2-A Offensive Lineman of the Year. Although a lineman’s stats are hard to gather, Chinn was the leader of an offensive line that amassed more than 300 yards rushing per game.

Poe was named the Region 2-A Offensive Special Teams Player of the Year after returning four kicks for touchdowns.

Thirteen other Green Wave players were named to the squad’s first or second team.
First team selections include Harley Davidson, Jacob Franklin, Steven Blasko, Chris Barry, Tyler Stockton, Matt Oliver, Quinton Pressley, Ryan Hargis and Dayne Britt.

Midway’s second team selections include Ethan Hall, Nate Lampkin, Wakon Roberson and Mark Childers.

What’s really impressive about Ray Ray’s (I elect not to call another dude “Sugar”) 1,800 yards is that there were at least 4 games that he did not carry the ball in the fourth quarter; not to mention the new slaughter rule that went into effect this season which results in the clock running, reducing time of possession.
