Maybe it was revenge, but it wasn’t real pretty. The Lady Wave softball team had been waiting for over a month to avenge a loss to the Knox Webb Lady Spartans. Earlier this season, the Waves had dropped a 6-5 heart breaker in extra innings in Knoxville. On Friday, the Lady Waves did not play their best game, but they did play with a lot of heart. The SOR girls came from behind late in the game to get a 6-3 victory.
Struggling throughout the game with wild throws and bad defensive decisions, the Midway ladies seemed to be fighting for their lives in every inning. The Spartans would get a runner on second in the first inning, but she didn’t score.
In the bottom of the first, Midway shortstop Alex Coffman would lead off with a walk, steal around the bases and score on a ground-out by junior Hannah Colyer. Webb would tie the score in the second, after the Spartans hit two singles, drew a walk and were benefited by a Midway error. Webb took the lead in the third with two runs, compliments of more errors made by the Waves. Pitcher Colyer finally helped quell the Lady Spartans with two strikeouts in the inning, followed by a put-out by second baseman Michele Walden. In the bottom of the third and after two ground-outs by the Lady Waves, senior Lacey Davidson and Colyer would both hit singles. First baseman Kati Alexander would get the big shot to the outfield to score Davidson, bringing Midway within one run of Webb.
The score would remain 3-2 in favor of Webb until the bottom of the sixth inning. That’s when the Lady Waves exploded for four runs to take a 6-3 lead. Alexander led off with a single and Walden drew a walk. Freshman Paige Moree hit back to the pitcher, who made a bad decision. Everybody was safe and the bases were loaded. Junior Krystal Rue and freshman Taylor Narramore would both hit RBI singles. Coffman drew a walk to force in another runner and Davidson would drive in another run with a base hit. The Lady Spartans would go down in order in the seventh. A pop-up to Alexander, a strikeout by Colyer, and a beautiful play by second baseman Michelle Walden ended the game and gave the Lady Waves the victory.
Colyer would get the win, posting eight strikeouts on the night. Rue had a big game at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI. Alexander also had a big performance, hitting 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Midway will face off against Region 2A foe Oliver Springs on Monday night at 5:00 in a much anticipated game.
