Lady Waves tomahawk the Tribe

This past Saturday, the Lady Waves of Midway traversed northward up the long and winding road of Highway 27, all the way to Oneida. The Midway football team had made this same trip some five months ago. The result of that trip left a bad taste in the mouths of many SOR fans, so the Lady Waves were looking for a little revenge when they reached the reservation of the Oneida Indians. Many of the faithful were a bit apprehensive about the trip, due to the absence of their All-State pitcher, Hannah Colyer. Hannah had a prearranged date with an ACT test and was unable to make the game. Thankfully, the rest of the team was prepared to take up the slack, and they did so with a convincing 12-1 win over Oneida.

Junior Michele Walden stepped in for Colyer and went the distance. Walden threw for nine strikeouts, while allowing only six hits on the afternoon. The game was all Green from the get-go. One double and seven singles would produce four runs in the top of the first inning, and the Lady Waves would never look back. The Girls from the South added two runs in the second frame, two in the third, and four more in the fifth. That would bring the game to an early end and would secure the victory for Midway. Walden had a tremendous day at the plate, going 4-4 with three doubles and an over the fence home run. First baseman Kati Alexander also held a smoking bat, going 3-3 with two RBI’s. Center fielder Paige Moree and left fielder Ashley Alexander had perfect days at bat, both hitting 2-2.

The Lady Waves had several impressive plays on defense. In the first inning, freshman third baseman Hali Morris caught an infield fly and doubled up a runner by gunning her down at first base. In the second inning, shortstop Alex Coffman made an impressive play when she ran down a pop fly deep behind third base. In the third inning, catcher Krystal “Rocket Arm” Rue gunned down a runner trying to steal third. In the fifth and final frame, Brianne Reynolds showed off her arm by throwing the ball all the way from right field to second base to get a runner out.

All in all, it was a good day for the Lady Waves. The team will be back in action against Tellico in a double header on Monday at Midway. Last year, the Green took two from Tellico, but both were highly contested games. The first game starts at 5:00 PM on Monday.
