Pick Panel – Week 2 Picks

The Blue Devils are coming off a 14-7 loss to Kingston. The Blue Devils lost to the Jackets last year by just 1 TD. The high school sports call-in show on the Comcast Community Channel has Blue Devil fans calling in asking for a coaching change in Harriman. They are quoted as saying “Coach Tapp can’t win the big game!”. One caller even said that “75% of the fans want Tapp gone.” Obviously, these ‘fans’ have lost their minds asking for a coaching change…however, this could play into Midway’s favor. Is this negativity affecting the team? Is Tony Lambert headed to Harriman next year?

The Waves traveled to Wartburg last week and came off the hill with a 14-0 victory. The Waves displayed a truly balanced offense unlike anything seen in recent years. But also present were several kinks in the SOR armor. Hopefully, for Green Nation fans, we will continue to see improvements from last week and the Waves can start the season 2-0.

“First of all, did Wakon have twin babies? It sure looked like it last Friday night. Every time I saw him, he seemed to have a kid hanging under each armpit. Maybe those Bulldog players were just lazy and thought they’d catch a ride on Wakon’s back down the field.

The Wartburg game was not a convincing victory, but it was a good start. Probably the poise of our young team was the most impressive thing. Viar and his offense converted on fourth down a couple of times in the first half. They also showed their grit in an exciting “2 minute drill,” marching down the field to score at the end of the half. T-Mac, Colt Johnson, and Murphy showed they were ready to play with some bone-jarring hits. T-Mac seemed to be everywhere, making numerous tackles or at least breaking up the play. The injury questions about Oliver seemed to be answered, as he was impressive on both sides of the ball. Henderson showed his versatility, running hard out of the backfield and making several key catches. That took some of the heat off Wakon, who was double and triple covered all night. Good start for this young season.

This coming Friday may be the game of the year for the Greenwaves. You can bet that the Harriman Blue Devils are not overlooking the Green after a hard-fought loss at Kingston on Friday. The Blue Devils know the importance of this game, and either team would have a leg up on the playoff march with a victory in this game. The only gauging factor I have on this one is to have seen the Green play a fairly even scrimmage against Kingston in the spring, and to know what Harriman did against Kingston last Friday night. If this proves right, this game may very well turn into one of the great games we have seen played by these two teams over the last several years. With that said, I’ll pick the Midway coaches to be the difference in this, and I’ll take Midway by 1 in a snot-slinger. I’d also like to pledge $10 to Ethan Hall for the purpose of getting a haircut. I missed three quarters of the Wartburg game trying to see over that rooster-top mohawk.”

“Hope I’m wrong but I’m taking Harriman in a close one.”
– Randy “Zipper” Rose

“I have to give my props to the Alcoa Tornados for taking it to the Maryville Rebels this past week. Winning without using the pass…awesome. However, the SOR boys did something as impressive by putting up the big, fat goose-egg against Wartburg in week 1.

Now we turn our attention to the Indigo Demons of Harriman. This has been a pivotal game for both teams over the last couple of years in the “old” region structure and will be no less important this year. The Big Green Machine needs to play the best ball so far to pull out a win this year.

Big Green Maniacs need to be out in force in the Emerald Forest this Friday night.

Waves win in a close one.”
– Ralton “Mule” Emory

“Well I was surprised from what I did see from the Waves Friday night but there is a lot that could be improved on. Viar and Wakon did have some big plays but there could’ve been a lot more. Hopefully this week Hicks will be lined up at the other WR spot and help take some of the heat off of Wakon. Oliver looked good running the ball; wasn’t big runs but got the first down when needed. Defense looked good but let those big plays go; hopefully they contain the Devils a little better. Well I think it’ll be a close game but I’m taking the Waves on this one… Don’t let me down. One last thing….what colors will Mr.Mason be reppin on Friday night? Blue or Green?”
– Kyle “Cannonball” Canup

“I expect Midway to play hard in front of the home crowd, but the Harriman Blue Devil bunch is gonna be too much for this young squad to handle. I see the Blue Devils pulling away late in the game. I hate to do it….Harriman gonna take this one.”
– Amber “Bock” Johnson

“This one is almost too close to call. Harriman showed well last week at Kingston with QB Chesser throwing it around pretty well. Inman is a pretty good back who could give Midway some troubles up front. Harriman’s defense is reportedly pretty good too or (maybe Vic Kings Yellow Jackets are bad offensively..hey on a side thought lets chase that rabbit a minute… will we ever see a Midway versus Kingston matchup, especially in the Emerald Forest?) Midway gutted out a tough win at Wartburg with a couple plays in the 1st half…..

I give Midway the close nod at home as young Tom Viar makes a play late. Midway in a close one…”
