Coming off a hard fought district loss to Harriman in week 2, the Greenwaves were looking to get back on track against Bledsoe County. Much to the surprise of the Green Nation, the complete opposite happened and the Bledsoe County Warriors would come into the Emerald Forest and leave with a 29-13 win.
It started off bad for the guys in green. Bledsoe would reel off a 60+ yard run on the very first play from scrimmage. However, that was negated a few plays later with a fumble which the Waves recovered. Three plays later, the Waves found themselves in a 4th and inch situation on their own 15 yard line. What happened next still has the Greenwave fans scratching their heads…a fake punt (without the fake..or the punt) with the ball lying helplessly on the 5 yard line gave Bledsoe a quick and easy touch down.
The Midway passing game would come to life with Wake N Bake Roberson making several “ESPN Top Plays” types of catches. But after one quarter of play, the Warriors would lead 14-7.
Then the bottom fell out. After great Warrior punt, Midway would take over with the ball inside their own 20…a few plays later and the dreaded pick-six. An interception for a touch down gave Bledsoe a 21-7 lead. The Waves were unable to find success against the blitzing 3-4 defense and the Midway defense did not have an answer for Bledsoe’s #32 all-district to-be running back.
Later in the 2nd, Bledsoe would fumble deep in their own territory and Midway’s Larry Risner would scoop it up and take it in to cut the lead to 21-13.
Bledsoe County would score again in the 3rd quarter and a fake PAT led to an easy 2-point conversion.
Midway would spark and sputter in the 4th but was unable to get in rhythm and Bledsoe would win, 29-13.
The Greenwave team we saw “play up” to their competition in the great show down with Harriman in week 2 appeared to “play down” to a Bledsoe County team that did not possess a size advantage to the guys in green.
Though the competition does not get any easier this week with visiting Grace Christian, we look forward to the return of a physical & focused Greewave team.
