Week 10 is here and it’s been a long season for the Green Nation.
This week, the Waves travel to Tellico Plains. Tellico Plains, Bledsoe County, Hancock County, Grundy County, etc………….why are we playing all these teams??? You can thank the new TSSAA classification this year whose major goal was to help reduce travel costs of teams. Fail.
The Tellico Plains Bears (6-3) are a tough team to predict. They defeated Rockwood in week 5, yet they lost to Harriman in week 7………
The Waves (2-7) are coming off a win against Hancock County.
Can the Waves end 2009 on a high note with a big upset? The Pick Panel chimes in………
Amber Johnson:
Just from looking at records, wins, and losses to the same opponents; this should be a good match-up for the regular season ender. Yeah, it’s been a tough year for this young Midway team, but there has been some improvements too.
I’m going with Midway in a close one.
Barry Narramore:
In late 1983, the Midway football team was ranked #1 in the state in single A football. The Greenwaves traveled to Tellico Plains to take on a very tough Bears team. This game was a very physical game and entering the 4th quarter the Green was trailing 6-0. Late in the quarter the Greenwaves mounted a long drive to the Bears 13 yard line. On 2nd and short Midway running back Randy Pack hit the line hard and was swarmed under by a big Bears defensive front. Randy, who was always very aggressive about getting back to the huddle, jumped and bumped into a couple of Tellico players. An unnecessary flag was dropped and unsportsmanlike conduct was called on the Midway running back. That penalty stalled the drive and the final score would be Tellico 6 Midway 0. At the time only one team may it to the playoffs. So that one penalty would most likely cost the 84 Greenwaves a chance at their very first playoff and their #1 state ranking. I played center/linebacker on that team and needless to say there is no love lost here between Midway and Tellico.
Hard to say if the Greenwave team has improved over the last several weeks. The Green relies heavily on the passing game and the shotgun snap. Weather conditions, the last few weeks, have not been very favorable to this type offense. The Greenwaves have showed improvement in the running game. Henderson, Oliver, and Viar combined for over a 100 yards rushing last week which would have been unheard of at the first of the season. Do not look for the running game to get that kind of yardage against a big Tellico team but Viar is due a big game and I think the Green can stop this bears offense like Harriman did. Give me the Green in a close game.
Ralton Emory:
I pick the Panda Bears from Monroe.
Kyle Canup:
I was glad to see midway win last Friday and especially on senior night. It’s good they won their last home game. Tellico Plains has some pretty noticeable wins especially over Rockwood but lost to Harriman barely as did we. I don’t have the best record win picking this year anyways so I’m not losing anything by picking Midway in the UPSET!!
Randy Rose:
It would be great to finish up with a win, hope the Green can pull it off, but I’m going to take the Bears at home.
Michael Rose:
Midway used to play Tellico Plains regularly up until the early to mid 1990’s. It was the scene of the famous Greg Herron Chicago Bears incident (read story here). Also I was on the receiving end of what had to be the dirtiest hit in the history of Midway football. I got speared in the back while receiving a play from the sideline from Coach Stan Branson. We were beating them like a drum and the kid got ejected. Tellico Plains is a dirty, dirty team.
Tellico Plains by two touchdowns.
