When, the Midway Lady Waves arrived at Webb School of Knoxville on Tuesday evening, the SOR girls weren’t sure of just what they should expect. The Lady Waves had smacked the Lady Spartans in the mouth a couple of weeks ago, pushing four runs across the plate in the first inning at Midway. But the Green girls could only get one more run in the final six innings of the game, winning 5-1. So on Tuesday, the Lady Waves hoped to have a little more consistency at the plate.
The game on Tuesday started the way the Midway fans had hoped. After one strike out, the girls opened fire with three consecutive doubles from Michelle Walden, Haley Parks and Alex Richardson. A walk by Taylor Narramore followed. The girls only plated one run, but had set the pace for some more Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em at-bats. Webb got only one single off pitcher Richardson, and the Lady Waves had a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Midway started with a ground out and a strike out in the second, but once again came alive with a Dee Borum walk and steal to second, Walden got another big hit to score Borum, then Parks singled to score Walden. Richardson followed by singling to score Parks. Webb would get two on in the bottom after a Midway error and a walk. However, three straight ground outs to Narramore, Walden and Richardson ended the inning for the Spartans.
In the third inning, Paige Moree would single and Halie Wiley would slap safely. Nobody would score, though. A pop up to Richardson at her pitching position, a strike out by Richardson and a ground out to Hali Morris at third took care of the Lady Spartans in order in the bottom.
The Lady Waves had not forgotten that they had not finished their home game against Webb very strongly. So in the fourth, the girls made a move to finish the Webb team in style. Walden drew a walk, and Parks singled to put two runners on. But the little freshman, Richardson, was about to put this one out of reach. She blasted a three-run monster shot over the center field fence. Narramore then singled, followed by a single by Hayley Patterson. Moree went long to left field for a standup double that scored both runners. After another Wiley slap-hit for a single, a walk by Borum and another single by Walden, the damage had been done. The Lady Waves were sporting a 10-0 lead.
Webb would get four runs in the last three innings, but the Lady Waves, subbing liberally, posted four more runs to get the 14-4 win. Richardson got the win from the mound, pitching a great game. Several of the girls had impressive days at the plate. Walden went 4-4 with a walk. Parks went 4-5 with two doubles. Richardson was 5-5 with two doubles and a home run.
Thursday nights game with Grace was canceled due to rain. The Girls travel to Athens on Friday to face off against an always tough McMinn Central team who have given the Lady Waves a fit in past years.
