After the resignation of Craig Moser, Midway High School principal, Mr. Scott Mason, found himself in an unexpected predicament….finding a new head football coach. After several months of searching, interviewing, and plenty of advice from the Monday morning quarterbacks, assistant coach and MHS math teacher Joe Campbell was named the head coach for the Midway Green Waves.
The Campbell family is rich in football tradition. Joe’s grandfather, Nat Campbell, was a former coach at Midway High School. His dad, Rusty, was a football state champion for the Loudon Redskins. And Joe and his 2 younger brothers all played football for the Green Waves.
We reached out to Coach Campbell recently for his first interview with SORSN.com.
SORSN: Congratulations on being named the new head football coach for the Green Waves of Midway High School. Tell us about your coaching resume.
Coach Campbell: Thank you! I’m fired up about this season. I played tight end for two years at Maryville College. From there I worked as a manager for two years at UT. While I was student teaching, I coached the O-line at Oliver Springs, and then coached their off-season routine. I spent a very short time at McMinn County High School, before coming to Midway where I have been for two years now.
SORSN: While at UT, you worked on Coach Fulmer’s staff. Tell us about your role there, what you gained from that experience, and any behind-the-scene tidbits that sorsn.com viewers would be interested in knowing.
Coach Campbell: I was assigned to Coach Chavez. I would get the practice schedule and then set up whatever drills we were running that day. Then during practice I would run the drills so that Coach Chavez could watch the players’ mechanics. Coach used to chew me out for being too slow for perimeter drill, but I never got any faster. Behind the scenes I know that to this day, the managers still give a most embarrassing player award in name of Albert Haynesworth.
SORSN: What is your first line of business as head football coach?
Coach Campbell: My first goal is not to be the only Head Coach still living with his parents come August, but I’m afraid that it is inevitable.
SORSN: What is the schedule for the team this Spring & Summer?
Coach Campbell: We’re going to work our tails off. We plan on knocking heads for two weeks in May and then getting back to our four day a week workout schedule come June.
SORSN: Have you hired a videographer for filming games? If not, do you have anyone in mind?
Coach Campbell: No matter how hard I try, I am afraid that Dad is going to stay retired. Mr. Kimberly does a very good job though.
Thanks for your time Coach and we look forward to the fall. Go Green!
