The MMS Boys JV basketball team played in 3 separate tournaments over the past few weeks. In some instances they would have to leave one site and go to another to quickly play another game. Throughout these games the boys showed the toughness and ability to have another successful season next year.
First off, how do you go undefeated and not win the championship? This is the case at the Madisonville tournament. The Green forfeited the first round game on account of playing in the TMSAA East Tennessee Sectionals. So with that “lose” the Waves had to play Vonore in the loser’s bracket. Vonore defiantly had the size advantage on the Waves but Midway pulled out a win with Griff Dishner leading the way. This put Midway against Loudon the next round where Seth Colyer showed his dominance in a 20 point win for Midway. Seth had a lot of help from Jack Lowe and Alex Thomason in this game. Also the 6th graders Jake Woody, Tyler Thompson, Landon Davidson, and Dakota Narramore showed that they will be big contributors in the future. After the game it was off to Lenoir City.
The first day of the Lenoir City tournament it was the Griff and Seth show as these 2 showed Harriman whose boss as the Waves pulled away in the 2nd half for a big county win. The rest of the week at LC Midway would not pick up any wins but lost some close games to OS, North, and Lenoir City.
Of course with all this, travel gas prices would go up. The first night of the Philly tournament the Waves had 2 games (seems like the norm now). The first game was full of poor shooting from the Waves which led to a loss to Madisonville. The next game was different as every player scored in a huge win over the host Philly Warriors. The Waves would come back on Friday as Griff led the way again with 22 points over Vonore to win the game and put Midway in the Championship against Madisonville. In the rematch the junior Jr Waves shot much better but so did Madisonville. A big first quarter was too much to overcome as Midway ended up 2nd in this tournament.
One theme that was relevant in these tournaments is that as the weeks went on the boys played extremely hard and improved from each game. This hard work will show in the years to come for Midway basketball.
