Church Softball

For the last several years, a few area churches such as Laurel Bluff Baptist Church and Luminary United Methodist Church have competed in the church softball league played at Flour Mill Flats ballpark in Harriman.  The women’s league has been dominated by St. Mary’s Baptist Church for years; however, over the last 2 years Luminary Methodist Church (LUMC) has steadily improved and last year challenged St. Mary’s for the top spot before losing to them in the playoffs.

So far this year, the ladies of LUMC softball have dominated their competition; out-scoring opponents a staggering 47-2 in 3 games.  The LUMC softball team is made up of many familiar South of the River names and faces with 13 of the 14 players graduating from Midway.  Their all-star pitcher, Connie Kelley (mother of MHS graduates Christy & Ashley Henry), is the one exception – she was a Meigs County Tiger.

About Luminary United Methodist Church

Luminary United Methodist Church is located on River Road in Ten Mile, just a few hundred yards south of Bayside Marina. Billy Kurtz is the pastor and his wife, Karla, plays an active role in organizing and managing activities through the church.

Worship is very important to us at Luminary. We believe there are many ways to praise God. Our 8:00 AM service reflects more of a Southern Gospel worship style while our worship service at 9:30 AM is a high-tech contemporary service. Our 11:00 AM service features a forty member choir and is more traditional in its format.
