2011 MHS Basketball Tip-Off

Midway opens up the 2011 basketball season this Tuesday as they take highway 58 south into Decatur to face the Meigs County Tigers. Both the Waves and Lady Waves have impressive rosters and expectations are high.

For the first time in recent years, the Lady Waves feature both experience and athleticism. Coach Woody’s Lady Waves have 4 seniors to lead this team. Hayley Roberson is coming off a great junior year in which she scored her 1,000th career point. Hali Morris is the anchor of the team and a big welcome back as she was battling a knee injury last year. Ally Klinker, as always, brings speed and agility to the court….now she brings even more experience and court vision. Rounding out the senior class is Darian Shultz. Darian brings more speed and is handling the rock well.

We talked to Coach Woody now that the season is here and the expectations she has for this talented bunch. Here is what she had to say about the 2011 Lady Waves.

We have picked up our practice pace thanks to the leadership of our seniors and junior. We have had more good practices than bad. I think this team wants to win; now it’s just a matter of getting it done. Good attitudes! Good Tempo! Now we just got to bring it 32 minutes on game night. Overall this is the best group of young ladies I have ever worked with. On and off the court they are good examples. They make me better every day. Come out and support them they sure deserve it and need your encouragement to be successful this season.

Things look promising for the Waves as well. You can bet that Coach Ruffner is pushing this squad to win and win often. The Waves have 3 seniors and joining them is group of juniors that are solid in size and athleticism, and a sophomore and freshman class that saw great success in junior high.

Senior Thomas Viar will anchor this team from the post position. Joining Thomas is another big man, Dusty Hope. Matt Jarvis will run the show from the point guard position. Matt is a good ball handler and with another year of experience, now brings more court vision.

The junior class is led by Caleb Ruffner. With defenses keying on Ruffner, fellow juniors Houser, Clower and Brummit should have the opportunity to step up and score early and often for the Waves. This junior class may be the deciding factor in the Green Wave success this season. Brummit has shown he can knock down big shots. Add in the tough defense and rebounding from Houser & Clower and this team could rack up some big wins.

Good luck to the our Lady Waves and Waves this season.
