Girls Game
In a game ill-suited for those with a weak stomach or for cardiac patients, the girls from “South Of the River” had to fend off a furious Monterey Lady Wildcats rally in the second half to leave their purple & white opponents “cat-a-tonic” with a 41-33 win Saturday evening. Midway started off the game with an early 9-7 lead and the Lady Waves were making it rain so many points on the Monterey defense with a 17-4 surge that Monterey fans needed an umbrella to give Midway a 26-11 half-time lead. Monterey whittled down the deficit to 30-18 at
the end of the third period. Monterey took advantage of the Lady Waves inability to buy a basket in the closing stages to get within 36-33 with just a hand-full of minutes to go in the game, but the Lady Waves scored the final five points of the game to escape with the 41-33 win. Midway was led in scoring by Hali Morris (10 points, 8 boards), Alisa Barger (10 points), Hayley Roberson (10 points), and Halie Wiley (8 points). Darian Shultz (5 boards) had a strong showing in the win.

Boys Game
It’s a well-known fact along the lines of Chuck Norris destroying the periodic table because he only recognizes the element of surprise that cats don’t like water. Well, the “‘Cats” from Monterey got drenched by some Green Waves from “South Of the River” in a 58-50 win, overcoming a late Monterey rally and awful warm-up music for the win. While the first ten minutes of the warm-up music was absolutely horrid, this writer would like to think the last five minutes of the warm-up music spurred the boys from “South Of the River” to an early 8-0 lead to take an early 16-6 lead at the end of the first period. Monterey would get within 28-19 at the half. The Wildcats would use assault and battery by their players, practically mugging the Midway players to get within 38-31 at the end of the third period. Monterey would put a real scare into the hearts of the “S.O.R.” faithful, pulling within 41-39 at one point in the final period. Midway would pull away down
the stretch to set the heart rate of Midway fans back to normal with a 58-50 win. Midway had a 30-26 tilt on the boards and a 7-6 edge in team steals. Adam “Doogie” Houser “M.D.” (13 points), Thomas “The Chairman Of The Boards” Viar (12 points), Caleb Ruffner (11 points, 9 boards, 6 assists), Matt “Money” Jarvis (9 points, 6 assists), and the “Christian Coalition” in Christian Moore (6 points) all led the Waves in scoring.
