The 5-2 Midway Greenwaves, coming off our annual beating at the hands of GCU, welcome the 2-5 Meigs County Tigers to the Emerald Forest this Friday night. It’s been many years since these 2 teams have faced each other and historically, when they do, it’s an all-out war. The youngsters can hear many stories of classic battles between these two programs from the folks up on the hill.
The Tigers are essentially cubs this year; a young team that is gaining some experience. Meanwhile, the Waves have lots of experience upfront as well as at several key positions. But you can take all that experience…all that lack of experience…and toss it out this week as these 2 teams will look to claw, bite, and “lay the lumber” to the person lined up across from them. The Emerald Forest will be THE place to be this Friday night.
Lady and gents, make your picks.
Ralton “The Mule” Emory:
I must say that my favorite game in the Meigs – Midway history has to be the one played in 1989. That was the game where El Nino brought rain of epic proportions. We were literally surfing instead of running on the field. And the Wave starters only played the first half, so you know we were enjoying ourselves. KA-BOOM!
No rain forecasted this year, but Waves will win.
Waves 28, Cubs 18
Steven “Fro” Sears:
Tough game last week against Grace Christian, but the outcome wasn’t too surprising. Midway needs to keep their head up because this week brings a better matchup. The Tigers have started out a little rough this season, but they won’t necessarily be an easy win for the Greenwaves. They just came off a big win last week against Lookout Valley and they have some momentum. Can Midway bounce back from last week’s defeat? Sure they can and I believe they will. Can I win the pick panel if I pick the Greenwaves this week? Probably not! I’m taking Meigs County this week in a nail biter. I’m sure this is a crazy pick, but I’ve been wrong before. Win Midway!!!! Meigs County 34 Midway 28. I know this is a crazy pick!
Kyle “Easy Money” Canup:
Glad last week’s game is behind us and now the Waves can focus on the rest of the season and look to get some more district wins under their belt. I know Meigs County is young but I like that Midway is lining up with them after all of these years. This could start a fun tradition game but it looks as if Midway will have the upper leg for a bit. Midways offense and defense are looking to come back after last week and really get some steam rolling again so look for them to be hitting hard and putting some points up. I think the Waves get out ahead early and continue to play a good game throughout. Midway bounces back and wins against our neighboring county.
Amber “Bock” Johnson:
This week’s matchup could be the resurrection of a longtime rivalry against our neighbors to the south. No matter the sport; whenever we play the tigers it’s sure to be a physical battle. I’ve got the Waves chalking another mark in the win column. Go green!
Barry “Boo” Narramore:
You are so right, Shawn! I remember in the late 70’s Midway and Meigs Co going into OT something like 3 years in a roll. I remember San Narramore scoring the winning TD in overtime one year, and nobody knew that he’d broke his collarbone earlier in the game. This game used to be the game of the year for the Greenwaves.
From what I’m hearing, sounds like we may be restarting this rivalry on a down year for the Tigers. But what we need to remember is that Meigs Co High School is a much bigger school then Midway. Year in and year out The Tigers, just by the numbers, should field a better team than the Greenwaves. But you have to figure in the size of the Heart of this year’s Greenwave team. This team has had 4 last minute games this year and got the win in 3; almost winning the 4th. If this game goes to the wire, my money is still with the Green!
One last comment on Grace Christian. The arrogance of the Grace Christian coaching staff by placing massage tables and giving massages to players and Coaches in front of the concession stand was an embarrassment to high school football to the point of being laughable. TSSAA is as big a joke as our US Senators and Reps. Also that cute little Dually Gator they were riding around in was lucky it kept its tires! Give me the Green by 14.
Not naming any turncoats, I did catch Josh Narramore and Randall Woody checking on possible massages for the chain gang.
