Catching up with Emmett Hegland: Senior and 3-sport athlete for the Green Wave
SORSN: An exciting game the other night at Midway to pull off an astonishing 94-93 win over Wartburg. You knocked down clutch free throws at the end to get the win. What was going through your mind when you stepped to the line?
Emmett: I thought about all of the big spots I’ve been in and realized it was no big deal. And probably took my 2 most calm shots of the night.
SORSN: You had an excellent football career at Midway, starting 3 years at QB. Tell us how you changed as a player from the time you took the reins as a sophomore to your final games as a senior.
Emmett: My sophomore year I was timid and did not even know if I really wanted to be the Quarterback, but I fell in love with it and gained a lot of confidence heading into my junior and senior year.
SORSN: Athletes are often superstitious. Superstitions may help them have a sense of control and stay calm leading up to and during games. Michael Jordan always wore his college shorts under his NBA jersey. MLB slugger Jason Giambi would wear a pair of thongs anytime he was in a hitting slump. Tennis great Serena Williams ties her shoes a specific way before a match. Do you have any superstitions or “quirks” for any of the sports you play? If so, tell us about those. If it involves thongs, keep that to yourself.
Emmett: I have a new superstition since our last game that no matter what before the game I can’t talk about how much he is going to score. Because when he dropped 50 we didn’t talk about it.
SORSN: What is your favorite pregame meal? Post game meal?
Emmett: Before games I like to eat something like pasta and after a milkshake.
SORSN: What are your plans after May of 2022 when you leave the halls of MHS?
Emmett: I plan to attend a 4 year university and get a business degree while playing football there.
SORSN: You have a fine coaching staff this year. Former standout shooting guard and now head coach Robbie Viar has surrounded himself with Milligan College’s big man Jacob Cawood and the big, bald beauty himself, Mr. Luke Hall. What are practices like?
Do you all ever do any passing drills? Coach Cawood must lead those because “nice pass Robbie” are words that have never been spoken before.
Emmett: It is a lot better than in years past. We have fun, but still get a lot done. We do a few passing drills and surprisingly Coach Viar usually leads them.
Good luck tonight against Oakdale and on the rest of the season. GBG.
