Midway took a trip up Coal Hill Road Tuesday to face the Yellowjackets of Coalfield. The trek down the mountain was much more enjoyable for the Wave crowd as both the girls and boys team got wins.
The Lady Waves had no problem with Coalfield to start the game as they built out a 23-10 lead after one period of play. Senior guard Abbie Parks had her best game of the year on both sides of the court and put Midway firmly in control. The Lady Wave took at 30-16 lead into the half. The domination continued in the 3rd quarter as Midway would build out a 20+ lead and Coach Hayes started to mix in some of his underclassmen with a couple starters in the 4th. However, the move may have come a little prematurely – the Lady Wave were unable to maintain ball control and the Jackets made a push mid-way through the 4th, cutting into the lead and forcing a return of the starting crew. But it didn’t take long before the varsity Lady Wave would quickly build the lead back up and take the 57-40 win on the road.
Abbie Parks led all scoring with 18 points. She added 5 steals and 4 rebounds as well. The Kid, Kyleigh Cawood, had an all-around game with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 8 steals. Addie Armes added 11 points and a pair of blocks.
The Coalfield boys was hoping to get their season heading in the right direction with a win over Midway….that did not happen. The Wave came out focused and ready to regroup following the loss to Oakdale, defeating Coalfield 73-40. Solid defense and ball movement helped the Wave to a 16-11 lead after the first. Peyton Steele led the way early with 6 first quarter points. Midway would add 19 points with balanced scoring in the second quarter to take a 35-19 lead into the break following a buzzer beater corner pocket 3 from Cooper Queener. Unhappy with just a 16 point lead, the Green Wave came out hot in the third – scoring 26 points in the quarter and doubling their lead. Queener maintained the hot shooting in the 3rd, knocking down 3 more triples to lead the scoring in the quarter. Midway headed out of Coalfield with a 73-40 win.
Dalton Cowell had 16 points in the win followed by Peyton Steele with 15 and Cooper Queener 14. Evan Lemons and Brennan Reed each had 13 in the balanced offensive attack.
Midway travels to Monterey on Friday.
