On Friday, Midway hosted the Harriman Blue Devils at Ruff arena. Thanks to mechanical failure of the vents (and of course a gym with no A/C), the only thing higher than the temperature in the gym was the volume level of Coach DeVries pregame music. Or perhaps I’m just getting old. Midway and Harriman would split the games with the Lady Wave winning 71-50 and the Wave losing 51-70 to top ranked Harriman.
The Lady Wave would jump all over Harriman from the tip and build a 23-7 lead in the opening quarter. The Lady Wave would continue the solid play on both ends, increasing their lead in the second quarter and maintain a 20-point lead through much of the game. The Lady Wave would cruise to a 71-50 win over the Lady Blue Devils.
Several freshmen contributed valuable minutes during the game and 9 players got in the scoring column. Kyleigh Cawood led the way with 17 points followed by Kiersten Ruffner and Kali Kile each with 13. Abbie Parks had 12 including a pair of 3s to start the game.
The Midway boys were big underdogs against the indigo demons, but no one told them that. Harriman who is 16-1 on the season with their only loss coming via a buzzer beater at Kingston, has breezed through region play with double digit victories. The Wave led much of the first quarter before Harriman took a lead in the final seconds of the opening quarter, 20-18. But the second quarter was detrimental for the Wave. Brennan Reed, who had 10 1st quarter points for Midway, was plagued with foul trouble that sent him to the bench for much of the 2nd quarter. Midway scored just 4 points collectively in the 2nd quarter and found themselves down 22-38 at halftime. Cooper Queener and Dalton Cowell provided a spark for the Waves offensively in the second half scoring 9 points each, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 2nd quarter setback. Harriman would go on to win 70-51. The Midway defense was able to hold the 6’9” Murray State commit, Jordan McCullum, to 14 points but balanced scoring from the remaining Harriman starting lineup propelled their offense to the win.
Reed led the scoring for Midway with 15, followed by Cowell 13 and Queener 9. Evan Lemons and Cowell pulled in 5 rebounds each in the loss.
