Well perhaps that isn’t completely true. The lights were out at Wartburg, but it had nothing to do with Midway’s shooting. If you’ve even been to the Wartburg…eh, Central…err, Wartburg Central gym, you know that the dimmer switch of the chandeliers in the gym are set to mood lighting. Thankfully, both Midway girls and boys were able to find the basket enough times to get wins tonight.
The Lady Waves and Wartburg Lady Bulldogs battled tightly in the first half with Wartburg taking an 18-16 lead into the break. Halftime adjustments proved successful as Midway would outscore Wartburg 23-8 in the second half to win 39-26.
Abbie Parks led the scoring with 13 points followed by Kyleigh Cawood who had 7 rebounds to go along with her 12 points. Kali Kile added 6 points.
The Midway boys have been in need of a win and they earned one tonight up on the mountain. The Wave took a 32-30 lead into the half with balanced scoring as 6 Midway players contributed points in the first half. With Midway’s senior Evan Lemons in foul trouble early and the freshman Cooper Queener having an off-night shooting from behind the arc, it would be the juniors that stepped up big tonight. Peyton Steele is generally the vocal leader on the court and tonight his game talked too scoring 9 points in each half. Steele was able to knock down mid-range jumpers and some contested layups to keep Midway in control on the scoreboard. Brennan Reed provided consistent scoring throughout the game and knocked down a couple big 3s just when Wartburg would start to make a run. And the surgeon, Dalton Cowell, cut up the Bulldog defense scoring a game high 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting.
Overall, a well-balanced offensive game from the Wave as they beat the Bulldogs 68-53.
Cowell led with 23 points. Peyton Steel had 18 and Brennan Reed 15. Cowell also led the team in rebounding with 8, followed by Reed and Lemons with 6 boards each.
