Tonight, Midway hosted the 1A District 4 championship games. The games were held at Midway Middle to accommodate the capacity crowd that was present for the consolation and championship games. The Lady Waves ended the regular season in first place in the district with a record of 7-1. The Lady Waves defeated Harriman in the semi-finals to advance to the championship game against Oakdale. The Midway boys ended the regular season in 3rd place and defeated Rockwood in the semi-final game to advance to play top ranked Harriman.
Girls Game
The Lady Waves and Oakdale Eagles tipped off at 6pm at O’Toole Hardwood for the district championship. The Lady Waves were heavy favorites but just like the two regular season games between these teams, it was a low scoring, back & forth game in the first half with Midway holding a slight edge. The Lady Waves defense managed to hold the Oakdale Eagle standout senior, Rylan Hicks, to just 3 points in the first half. But Midway was unable to capitalize as the Lady Waves struggled offensively against the Oakdale zone defense. Unable to penetrate, the Midway offense struggled to produce shots and the Lady Eagles kept the pace of the game slow. Kali Kile, Addie Armes and Kyleigh Cawood each knocked down a 3-ball to help keep Midway in front to close out the half, 19-14.
Midway would have a solid 3rd quarter, scoring 15 points to build out a double-digit lead. Kyleigh Cawood had 7 in the quarter and Kali Kile added 5 to put Midway up 34-20 going into the final quarter…..or so we thought it was the final quarter. Midway would go on a 4th quarter scoring drought. The Lady Waves went scoreless the entire 4th quarter and costly turnovers by the Lady Wave gave Oakdale life. Held in check in the first half, Oakdale’s Hicks would go on a run in the 4th. The senior scored 8 points in the fourth, including the tying bucket at the buzzer to send the game to its first overtime.
In the first overtime, Midway finally ended their 10-minute scoring drought. Addie Armes, Abbie Parks and Cawood all added buckets in the first overtime to give Midway a 1-point lead in the closing seconds. In what appeared to be (by video cameras and everyone not wearing Oakdale red) a clean block, Armes was whistled for a foul with 4 seconds remaining. The foul sent Oakdale’s Hamby to the line for a chance to tie and take the lead. Hamby made the first to tie the game but missed the second. The Lady Waves secured the rebound, sending the game into a second overtime.
In the 2nd OT, Midway’s Kali Kile knocked down a huge 3-pointer in the opening possession and Addie Armes scored 5 more points to close out the game, clinching the district championship for the Lady Waves, 49-43.
Cawood led the scoring with 16 followed by Armes with 13 and Kile 11.

Boys Game
The Midway Green Wave have been playing good basketball in the latter half of the season evident by their back-to-back wins over Rockwood as well as playing Harriman close just a couple weeks ago at Harriman. But tonight, the ball didn’t bounce favorably for the Wave. Harriman jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead. It would be 3-minutes into the game before Midway was able to get points on the scoreboard. Midway’s Dalton Cowell had a solid first half, getting to the block in heavy traffic for 12 points. But defensively, the Wave didn’t have an answer for Harriman’s Jordan McCullum. The lengthy senior would effortlessly put up 28 points and lead Harriman to a district championship.
Dalton Cowell led the Wave with 19 points. Peyton Steele had 8 and Brennan Reed 7.
