The Midway Lady Waves opened the 2008 season with a convincing 13-0 win over the visiting Oakdale Lady Eagles. Lady Wave pitcher Hannah Colyer allowed just one hit, while striking out eight batters in the win over Oakdale. Hannah also provided a big part of the offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
While the defense was solid, Midway’s offense got off to a sluggish start. The girls managed only six hits on the day. Haley Parks was a bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk. Krystal Rue provided the only other hit.
After several walks, hit batters, and the occasional hit, Midway pushed a runner around the bases to score. The Waves held a tight 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning. Then, in a spectacular burst of scoring, Midway exploded with twelve runs in the third and fourth innings. When asked what he thought of the win, first year Co-Head Coach Rob Viar stated, “I hope we got some of the nerves out of our systems.”
There will be no room for nervousness come Wednesday. That evening, the Lady Waves travel to meet the powerful Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats and their hard-throwing pitcher, Kim Hall. When these two teams last met, the 2007 Region 2-A Championship was on the line. That meeting turned into a contest that will be long remembered in the annals of SOR history. The game went deep into extra innings. When the dust had cleared, the Lady Waves stood victorious over the Lady Cats and brought the cherished Region Championship back to Midway.
Wednesday night’s game will start at 5:00pm. The girls will be at Knoxville Webb on Thursday. That game will also have a 5:00pm start time.
