Oh… the pain!!!!!! The Midway Lady Wave softball team traveled across the Bridge last Wednesday night to take on the rival Lady Yellow Jackets of Kingston. The Green bats had been extremely hot the last couple of weeks, but turned colder than ice in Kingston. Call it “winning too easy” or “extreme pitch speed change.” Either way, the Lady Waves could not get the hits at the right time and fell 1-0 to the solid Kingston team.
Midway co-head coach Rob Viar stated, “If anyone had told me before the game that we would come to Kingston and hold them to one run scored, I would have felt pretty good about our chances to win.” Most of the Lady Waves fans felt the same way after the girls had scored 125 runs in the past six games. It was a different story on Wednesday night, as the Waves could muster no runs though seven innings of play.
The game was touch and go the entire way. Midway ace Hannah Colyer pitched the whole game. Colyer allowed just three hits, while striking out nine batters and allowing no earned runs.
If not for an infield error, Colyer could very well have recorded the shutout.
Midway started off the first inning with a walk and a hit. However, both runners would be left stranded with no runs scored. The Lady Waves could manage only one base hit over the next four innings. The Jackets would also struggle at the plate. In the bottom of the fifth, Kingston put the Waves in a tight spot, as they loaded up the bases. Colyer came out the jam, though. At the end of the inning, the game was still scoreless.
Midway threatened in the top of the sixth. A Lacey Davidson single and a walk by Kati Alexander put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Michele Walden drove the ball deep to right field, but the Jacket left fielder made a great play to end the inning. An infield error by Midway in the bottom of the sixth proved to be costly. The error, along with a later passed ball, allowed the lone unearned run of the game.
Midway didn’t just pack it in, though. Catcher Paige Moree would open the top of the seventh inning with a single. Bothered by a sore knee, Moree exited to the dugout in favor of a courtesy runner. The Lady Wave offense hit another snag, when the runner was thrown out trying to steal second base. Still, the Lady Waves didn’t quit. Haley Parks busted a hard shot to left center. Krystal Rue would then base hit to put runners on first and second. Taylor Narramore would then ground out, but moved the runners to second and third with two outs. Alas, Midway’s next batter would drive the ball back at the pitcher, who made the play at first to end the game. Kingston 1 and Midway 0.
The Green Fans may never recover from this dark area of depression!!!
