On Thursday night, the Midway Lady Wave softball team secured the top seed for the upcoming District 3A Tournament. The SOR girls earned a convincing 7-0 victory over the second place Harriman Lady Blue Devils. The Lady Waves had already beaten Harriman 3-0 on Tuesday, after Midway pitcher Hannah Colyer had pitched a perfect game. With Thursday’s win, Midway completed a regular season sweep in district play, achieving a spotless 8-0 district record.
On Thursday, the game started off better for the Lady Blue Devils, as their lead-off batter reached safely on a slap bunt. Their momentum was quickly stopped just two pitches later. The runner decided to test the arm of catcher Haley Parks by trying to steal second. Parks fired the ball to shortstop Alex Coffman, who made a nice play to apply the tag. The Lady Waves couldn’t get anything going in the first couple of innings, though. The Harriman pitcher seemed to have good stuff. Not until the third inning, after Taylor Narramore was hit by a pitch, did Coffman slip one up the middle to score Narramore. Using her speed, Coffman rounded the bases on the same play and gave the Waves a 2-0 lead.
The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth. After a walk by Lacey Davidson and a Colyer single, second baseman Michele Walden would get a big hit. Davidson and Colyer both scored on the play, stretching the Midway lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the sixth, Parks singled and Krystal Rue would lay down a great bunt and reach safely. Narramore opened up the flood gates, when she stroked one to center field to score both Parks and Rue. Davidson would later single to score Narramore.
Colyer pitched all seven innings, giving up only three hits. She struck out twelve batters. Midway currently has a 12-3 overall record.
