Lady Waves Take Two at Tellico Plains

The Lady Wave softball team traveled to Tellico Plains to take on the Tellico Plains Lady Bears on Tuesday in a double header. Little was known about the Lady Bears. Some of us thought we might get a chance to play a few people and rest our ace pitcher Hannah Colyer. That did not turn out to be the case. The Lady Bears were a very solid team. If not for a late game rally by the Lady Waves, the Green wouldn’t have escaped with a win in the first game.

In the opening game, the Lady Bears quickly took a first inning lead. The lead-off batter drew a walk, and then stole around the bases on passed balls. The Bears would hold a 1-0 lead all the way through the fourth inning. The Lady Waves did put several runners on base, but could not get a hit at the right time to tie the score.

In the top of the fifth and final inning, Taylor Narramore led off with a walk. Alex Coffman would then bunt, trying to move Narramore to second. The Tellico throw to second was off, and Coffman reached first safely. Lacey Davidson bunted and, again, all runners were safe. With bases loaded, Colyer would hit to third and the third baseman would gun Narramore out at home. The score remained 1-0 in favor of Tellico. Kati Alexander would now come up to bat with the bases loaded. “Alexander the Great” proceeded to drive the ball high to right field. Coffman would tie the score with a tag-up at third. Now, the pressure was off with the Coffman score. Michele Walden would calmly rip the ball to right field for the two-run double. The Bears could get nothing going in the bottom of the inning, and Midway would get the win 3-1.

In the second game of the night, the Lady Waves would jump on the Lady Bears early and cruise to a 4-0 win. Shortstop Alex Coffman scooped up several balls in this game and showed off her rocket arm. Anybody who doesn’t think Alex is the best shortstop in the league didn’t see her play at Tellico.

Midway did all their damage in the second inning. After a Walden walk, Haley Parks would get a single. Then, Krystal Rue would drive a long hit to the outfield to score Walden and get a double herself. Coffman would walk. Davidson would then collect two RBI’s on a single. Colyer scored Coffman on a single. Midway would smack the ball around for the rest of the game, but the solid Lady Bears defense made the plays and did not allow any more runs to cross home plate. Final score: Midway 4, Tellico 0.

Midway’s final regular season game will be this Thursday evening. The Lady Waves will host AAA McMinn County. Midway is undefeated on their home field this season. That record may be tested Thursday night. Earlier this season, the Waves lost a close one to McMinn County in Athens. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
