Waves win, advance to 2nd round

We all do things that we regret…for me, I regretted not making the trip to Cosby on Friday night. With rain in the area and Midway considered the underdog, I opted to stay home in the dry last Friday. Driving to Cosby to stand in the rain only to see the Waves exit the playoffs was not very appealing to me..not to mention my wife is pregnant with our second and I received “the look” when I mentioned the thought of going to the game.

I, like many of you, stayed home in the dry watching Vegas Vacation..again. Meanwhile, the Midway Greenwaves were playing the game of their lives. An offense that was expected to struggle with three key members out, scored 46 points and racked up nearly 400 total yards against the #2 team from Region 1A, the Cosby Eagles. To say that Cosby is a tough place to play is an understatement. Cosby boasts some of the rowdiest fans that you will ever see, especially once the “buzz” kicks in (just kidding Cosbyians).

Despite the weather, it was an offensive shoot-out. In the first half, Midway would score on a big run by Ray Robinson, TD passes to Wakon Roberson & Josh Hicks, and a fumble recovery for a TD by Quinton Pressley. Midway would take a 27-20 lead into the break.

In the 2nd half and the rain coming down harder, the Waves opted to keep the ball on the ground and let Mr. 5K, Ray Robinson, carry the offense. He succeeded. It was boom-boom-boom, Ray Ray pounding the Cosby defense for the next 2 quarters, rushing for 3 more touchdowns, and giving Midway the 46-34 victory.

With kicker Mark Childers out of the lineup, Jack Henderson has stepped up. Henderson hit 4 of 6 PATs on the night.

There were also several big plays on defense. Just before halftime, Steve Blasko forced the fumble which Pressley snatched up and returned for a touch down. Pressley & Josh Langley both had huge 4th down sacks and Josh Hicks batted down several passes in the secondary.

Quinton Pressley had a great game under center, completing 3-3 for 2 touch downs and rushing for 71 yards.

In an interview with Goose Lindsay a few weeks ago, Ray Robinson mentioned a personal goal of 200 rushing yards in a game. Last Friday, Ray Ray accomplished that as he rushed for 207 yards. R2 now only needs 100 yards to reach 5,403 career yards which will move him ahead of Andre Flowers and become the #10 All-Time Rusher in TSSAA history. [source]
