Midway Middle Plays Cherokee till the end

The Midway Middle School Jr Waves football team has had a rough start to the season. Losses to Rockwood and Sunbright had the Jr Greenwaves playing with their heads down way to early in the season. But what a difference a week makes.

The Jr Greenwaves traveled across the bridge to face the Yellow Jackets of Cherokee Middle School. The Yellow Jackets fielded a very large team but someone forgot to remind the Greenwaves that they were too small..and too young as there are only four 8th graders on the team. The Midway defense had the Cherokees on their hills and consistently kept them in 4th and long situations. The 1st quarter saw both teams playing solid defensively and the 1st quarter ended scoreless. That changed late in the 2nd quarter when QB Christian Moore took the ball just across mid-field on a boot-leg. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the half, Moore then connected with Tyler Clark on a deep pass that put the Waves at the 5 yard line. On the next play, Moore rolled right, raced to the corner and found the pylon….give him 6!

The 2-point conversion failed and the Waves would take a 6-0 lead into the half…leaving the home town crowd (and the visiting team fans) dazed.

In the third quarter, Cherokee found successful running between the tackles and would score and take an 8-6 lead.

The score would remain at 8-6 until deep into the 4th when the Midway defense got suckered by a half-back pass that lead to a touchdown and Cherokee would then take a 16-6 lead that they would not surrender.

The Greenwaves played a remarkable game but it simply came down to the depth and size being in the Yellow Jacket’s favor. An 11-man rotation versus a 2-man rotation is just too much to overcome across 4 quarters.

Congratulations to the Midway Middle Greenwaves on an excellent played game.
