Midway Middle over Wartburg

On Monday, the Junior High basketball team got the new semester started off perfectly with wins over Wartburg.

We joined the Lady Waves game already in progress and found Midway down by 10 in the 3rd. They ended the quarter strong, cutting it down to a single digit lead to start the final stanza, 17-23. A little more than 2 minutes into the 4th quarter the game was tied and the momentum in Midway’s favor. With 3 minutes remaining in the game, Midway took the lead; a lead they would not surrender.

Midway’s Abby Bertrum had a great game and led the charge in the 2nd half. In addition to good play by the guards, the Lady Waves’ post players done a great job on the boards and knocking down clutch shots down the stretch.

The Jr High boys’ game was not nearly as close. It was clear from warm-ups that it would be a long night for the visiting Wartburg (aka Central) Bulldogs. At the end of the first quarter, Midway led 24-0 and the 2nd quarter was no better for the Bulldogs as Midway’s Woody & Griffin continued to score easily on fast break layups. Wartburg would remain scoreless while the Waves would add 23 more points to take a 47-0 lead into the half. This of course allowed Coach O’Toole to go really deep on the bench and give some guys some playing time. The Bulldogs would score and ended the game with (I think) 23 points while Midway closed with 56.

Congratulations to Midway Middle School girls and boys basketball team with their wins over Wartburg.
