Pick Panel: Green will win Friday night

Randy “Zipper” Rose: This rivalry goes way back and is usually a very tough, hard-hitting game. Midway was impressive in the first game of season, but wins are hard to come by on Rockwood’s home field. Pulling for the Waves big and I hope I’m wrong but I’m going with the Tigers.

Jeff “King of da” Hill: This week is a tough one of sorts. Rockwood, being blown out by Oneida, is really not a surprise. Oneida is very good. But on the other hand The Mighty Wave offense flexed their muscles Friday night and racked up 40. I do believe that The Raven will return yet another punt and/or kickoff for a touchdown. Rockwood will put a good fight at home but to no avail… Green will conquer! Waves by 12!

Ralton “The Mule” Emory: This is a tough one. I would like to think that Rockwood just had a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad week against Oneida, but I am not sure.

Last year, Rockwood beat the Indians by a touchdown in a defensive struggle. And we here at Midway know that the Indians have a good defense. So, either they improved their offense or Rockwood regressed. I am hoping for the latter.

55% logic, 45% emotion: Midway.

Amber “Bock” Johnson: Who to pick? Do I pick based on emotions (like most women) or do I go with team history? Every year I say this is going to be the year we beat Rockwood. Well……here I go again. I think we can beat ’em…even though we are playing in the Tiger Den, and they have out ran us in the past. If we can stop the run, minimize turnovers, and get the offensive bugs out….Midway wins. Come on boys….THIS IS THE YEAR WE BEAT ROCKWOOD.

Barry “Boo” Narramore: Coach Moser is nationally known as a professional poor mouther. I know it and everybody knows it but this year I bought it. Now once again the boys have sucked it up and took it to the C.C .bunch. Yes we’ve lost some good players but maybe this bunch has some heart. I was pleasantly surprised Friday night by the way we dominated the 3A School. Next Friday will be a different story. Rockwood will not be looking to go 0-2 with single A schools. We will find out what the Green are made of this week. Rockwood will know that they have to stop Poe on the outside and that’s gonna give Ray-Ray some room up the middle and I believe we will bring home the victory. Give me Midway in a tough close fight.

Michael “Long-Winded” Rose: After an odd matchup in the home opener against what was called a “power” 3A Claiborne County team (read large and slow), the season really kicks off this week with the Green Team Roane County matchup, involving Midway and the Tigers from Rockvegas. The Waves, coming off an impressive win over Claiborne County, travel to the land that everyone except Wal-Mart forgot to tussle in what looks to be one of the best matchups of the week. The Tigers, stinging from a whipping at the hands of Oneida, will be looking to put their first W in the win column against their cross river rival Midway (boy if they ever built that long rumored bridge from Camp John Knox to Caney Creek, this thing could get interesting). This looks to be a dandy of an intra-county matchup.

From multiple sources deep SOR, Midway played well in spurts Friday night, with a powerful thunder and lighting running attack with Robinson, Poe and Pressley. The Raven appears to have gained some muscle while also picking up an extra step of speed (this bird can really fly and from all reports a great student too) and R2 appears to be again prepared to run over, through, but typically not around any defender (or defenders) in his way. The quarterback play Friday was good with Pressley at the helm, but the passing game remains untested after the tune-up in the opener. The interior defense once again looks strong, but the Wave team appeared a little soft on the edges Friday night. Hopefully some film work with Coach Moser and Coach Reynolds um Walker, will tighten up some of the weaknesses on the corner and secondary from the opener.

As for our feline friends in the city that Brillo built, there was a lot of preseason hype on this Rockwood team as maybe being competitive in their region. Early predictions in a prominent local publication had the Rockwood team as a 6 point favorite over Oneida, and a 7 point favorite over Midway, two single A teams that probably shouldn’t compete with their bigger school friends. Well lets throw that thing out the window (and any other publication other than the SORSN.com, the source for all sports SOR) after Rockwood was thoroughly whipped by a Oneida team with a brand new coach and looks to be struggling a bit on both sides of the ball. I look for the Tigers to improve this week, however.

This will be a battle, with Rockwood ready to give a better effort than the past Friday night. Midway looks prepared again to contend for a playoff run in what looks to be a very good region, but like SORSN.com’s editors short lived former Subaru (more on this later), Midway needs to tune and tighten some things up in order to fire on all cylinders.

This week I like the Green team in a hard fought contest, the Green Team from South of the River that is…….
