Lady Waves Double Up Greenback, Hold Off Grace

Last Friday evening, the Midway Lady Waves traveled to Greenback for a district double header against the Lady Cherokees. Right from the start, the SOR girls showed that they meant business. Seven Lady Waves reached base in the first frame, and all seven crossed the plate to score.

Midway went on to add another six runs in the game, including a two-run blast by center fielder Danielle Borum. Greenback did manage to score a run in the third inning, but that’s all the stingy Lady Wave defense would allow. Final: 13-1, SOR.

Leading the way for the Lady Waves at the plate were Borum (2-3, HR, 2B), second baseman Taylor Narramore (2-3, 2B), first baseman Taylr Hall (2-3, 2B) and third baseman Hali Morris (2-3, 2B). Alex Richardson was the winning pitcher.

The second round of the evening wasn’t that much different than the first. After right fielder Halie Wiley singled to lead things off, Borum came back to the plate and set a Lady Wave record. Continuing a streak she started at Rockwood earlier in the week, Borum belted a homer in her third consecutive game! The Midway girls once again cruised through this one, winning by a final score of 11-3.

Top hitters in the second game included Borum (2-3, HR), Richardson (2-2) and catcher Christina Stansbury (2-3).

This Thursday, the Lady Waves faced another district opponent. This time the action took place within the friendly confines of “The Hill”, and the visitors were the Lady Rams of Grace Christian Academy.

As the big Midway crowd soon found out, Grace is a much improved team. The Lady Rams started out the game hitting the ball. But thanks in part to a nice play involving catcher Christina Stansbury and first baseman Taylr Hall, the Lady Waves held Grace scoreless in the first frame. Hits by center fielder Danielle Borum and left fielder Paige Moree helped the SOR girls strike first. After one inning, Midway led 1-0.

After a rocky patch for the Midway defense, Grace managed to get a run on the board and tie the game up in the top of the second. Soon after, pitcher Alex Richardson kicked it up a notch and struck out two batters to put an end to the Lady Rams’ momentum.

Things were tense but quiet until the bottom of the third. That’s when Borum knocked one all the way to the right field fence for a big triple. On an infield ground out by the next batter, Borum tried for home and was called out on a very close play. Richardson followed with a triple, but the Midway surge stalled and left her stranded.

Midway's Danielle Borum has been on a hot streak as of late.

The atmosphere remained taut, as both teams threatened to score for the next couple of innings. No one delivered until the bottom of the fifth. That’s when the Lady Wave offense turned it on. Right fielder Halie Wiley singled to lead off the frame, and second baseman Taylor Narramore walked with one out. After Richardson beat out a fielder’s choice, speedster Wiley turned on the afterburners to score from third. 2-1, Midway. After another Midway out, Hall came to the plate and delivered in a big way. She cracked a solid hit to the outfield, scoring both Narramore and Richardson. 4-1, Lady Waves!

The intensity would reach its climax in the top of the seventh. After the first three batters hit safely, an obstruction call against Midway would give Grace their second run of the game. The Lady Waves still had a 4-2 lead, but no outs. And two runners were on base. The next two batters popped out, but Grace had runners on second and third with Midway leading by only two. Thankfully, Richardson delivered with a big strikeout to secure the victory! Final score: 4-2, Lady Waves.

Big contributors at the plate for the Lady Waves included Borum (2-3, 3B), Hall (1-3, 2RBI), Richardson (1-3, RBI) and Moree (1-3, RBI). Richardson was once again the winning pitcher.
