SOR 5K Fun Run

Held on Saturday, July 30, the inaugural SOR Fun Run featured a Kid’s Mile, a 2-Mile Walk and a 5k Run.  With 85 participants, all proceeds benefited the Midway High School Basketball and Football programs.

The Roberson family prepare for the 2-mile walk and the 5K run.

The Kid’s Mile kicked off the event.  Participants raced around the Midway baseball field while parents and bystanders cheered them on.  Miss Emma Snow won the gold medal, Nathan Byers the Silver and Jake Sullivan the Bronze.

The 2-Mile Walk featured 26 participants ranging in age from the young to the not-so-young.  Completing the race with the Top 5 times were Drake Romines, Sammy Hester, Kay Alexander, Pam Hutchinson and Jenna Roberson.

The 5k Run was chip-timed by Total Race Solutions and the course, which started at the Midway baseball fields and continued down Laurel Bluff road, was USTAF certified.  Roane County was well-represented in the 5k Run with 30 of the 56 runners being local; however, the event drew many from outside the county.  The field included runners from Loudon, Knox, Hamilton and Morgan Counties as well as a few from out of state.

Pre-race favorites Erick Russell (31) and Andrew Layne (15), both of Kingston, set the pace early and ran most of the race side-by-side.  Russell took his first lead of the race, sprinting past Layne, a hundred yards before the finish; he captured the 1st place finish with a time of 19:08.  Layne finished just steps behind with a time of 19:12.  When asked about his final burst, Russell added, “My face wasn’t lying, I was hurting, but I always save a little for one final sprint.”

Midway’s Hayley Roberson (17) was the fastest female of the day with a time of 25:31 and Rachel Layne (13) of Kingston finished just behind her with a time of 25:55.  Roberson and Layne finished 12th and 13th overall respectively.

Kelly Davis, of Wartburg, was the Female Master Winner (ages 40+) with a time of 27:31.  She finished 16th overall.

Victor Poole, of Rockwood, was the Male Master Winner (ages 40+) with a time of 22:37.  He finished 5th overall.

Emma Snow receives her medal and award from race director Amy Woody

We asked Race Director, Amy Woody, what it takes to put an event like this together and if she had already started thinking about next year’s race.  Without hesitation, Woody responded, “An event like this requires a lot of time and a lot of really good help!  Absolutely, I’ve already started planning for next year’s race. There were so many people who attended the Fun Run but didn’t participate who later told me they were inspired and planned to compete in next year’s Fun Run. I think everyone had a lot of fun and I know the MHS football and basketball programs truly appreciate all the great support!”
