Chris Borum’s Midway Middle School softball team has started the season off on an impressive roll. Coach Borum, who is assisted by David Sohm, has eight returning 8th grade girls in his starting lineup. The young Lady Waves are two weeks into the 2011 season, and they have already claimed eight victories, compared to only one loss.
Four of Midway’s wins came this past weekend, when the SOR girls went to compete in the Athens Middle School Tournament. The Lady Waves reeled off four straight victories and brought home the championship trophy. Especially impressive in the tourney was the pitching of 8th grader Raygn Hall. She faced a total of 43 batters on the weekend, striking out 28 of them. Hall allowed only four walks.
The Lady Waves’ offense was also dominant at Athens. The Midway girls outscored their four opponents by a total of 41-4. Needless to say, there were many offensive highlights. One of the most notable ones happened in the final game against Bledsoe. That’s when Amber May, Midway’s lone 7th grade starter, blasted an in-the-park home run to put an exclamation mark on the Lady Waves’ championship run.
With more than a month to go in the regular season, the MMS Lady Waves are already in high gear. The Midway girls will be in action again on Thursday, when they travel to Loudon to face the Lady Redskins. This game will be a rematch of Monday’s classic at Midway, where the Lady Waves picked up a hard fought win. Game time on Thursday is 6 PM.
