SORSN: Coach, in two weeks the lights come on for the 2013 season. I know the coaches and players are excited to test their summer work. Help us get to know the 2013 Waves by summarizing what you’ve seen from them this summer and what you hope to see from them in first part of the season.
Coach Campbell: Shawn, we have great group of Jr.’s and Sr.’s who have worked extremely hard all off season, mentored the underclassman, and created more of a family like atmosphere than just a team. We are strong and mobile upfront, our backs and receivers have matured, and we get better with every practice. We have veterans at nearly every position on the field. That is something we haven’t been able to say in a long time.
SORSN: Coach, introduce us to your staff.
Coach Campbell: We have had the same coaching staff now for 3 years.
Coach Ryen Minton is our DC and Weight Room coach. Last season we didn’t have a player miss a single game because of injury because of his off season routine. He likes to spend his down time on the Hiwassee River helping those who can’t swim, who gets stuck rocks, etc…
Coach Gabe Patterson works especially close with our QB’s and LB’s. Because of him our QB’s can now run more plays than just 1200 Roy.
Coach Lewis Edwards works with our WR’s. Coach Jones is calling weekly wanting his resume after the job he has done with these receivers.
Coach Sam McCart is a semi new face. Coach McCart has helped on and off for about 4 years with scouting, spring practice and fall camp. He is finally with us full time coaching DB’s and RB’s. He has a Michael Jordanesque approach to making interceptions that seems to work.
Coach JP Holt helps us on a limited bases, mostly in the weight room. He does a great job!
Finally, Coach Steve Spurrier has relentlessly been trying to get a job with the Greenwaves, even going as far as to adopt our no shirt, no shoes coaching policy (see pic). Finally, I let Coach Spurrier know that in Roane County we hire teachers, not coaches.
SORSN: The Waves are on the road for the opener, traveling up to Boone Lake to face an unfamiliar opponent, Tri-Cities Christian. What can you tell us about the Gold Eagles of TCC?
Coach Campbell: Tri-Cities is running ads in the paper weekly asking anyone who wants to play ball to come and join the team. So if you know anyone who wants to re-live their glory days, send them to Kingsport and they can face us on August 23rd.
SORSN: Last year, we made it 10 weeks before surrendering to the request for an interview with Coach O’Toole. IF we were to get Coach O’Toole penciled in for an interview earlier in the season, what would be topics of discussion that you could recommend for us to have with him?
Coach Campbell:
Potato Chip etiquette
Best i-phone apps
Baby Sitting
What day of the 90 day plan is he on
Laundry
Lawn Care
SORSN: Coach, SORSN has photographic evidence that several of the MHS faculty, including one from your coaching staff, was seen this summer wearing the unfavorable orange and blue colors from the north side of the bridge. We’ve been asked to destroy these and even turned down lottery tickets to “lose” these photos. If photos of your staff wearing blue and orange clothing surfaced, what would be punishment for said staff?
Coach Campbell: He would be forced to share a bag of potato chips with Coach O’Toole while slides of blue and orange images were flashed on a projector.
SORSN: Former football trainer and MHS alumni, Guy Rucker, was seen on primetime TV with Larry the Cable Guy on his History Channel show, Only in America. Name 3 other MHS alumni, the cable show they would most likely be seen on and why.
Coach Campbell:
Jake Campbell – LOST – He now lives in Alabama, and if that’s not LOST, I don’t know what is.
Spencer Myers – True Blood – Dark Hair, pale skin, only comes out at night, and the force is still strong with that one.
Ralph Ramey – Ice Road Truckers – Does this one need to be explained?
SORSN: Coach, thanks for your time and good luck on the 2013 season. Go Big Green!
