Pick Panel awakens for 2014 season

The Midway Greenwaves open the 2014 season at home against the Crusaders of Tri-Cities Christian. Last year, the Waves opened up on the road at TCC with a 34-23 win. This year, Midway will have a slightly different look. No longer is #5 Lyle under center; this year it will be senior #10 Mason Woody taking the bulk of the snaps. Woody will be protected by an all-star line of big men. Ethan Crabtree, Hayden Hester, Brandon Patterson, and Gage Patterson make up a 4-senior front line. Junior Seth Colyer joins the 4 seniors to make up what is expected to be one of the best front lines in school history.

The Waves do have one Achilles heel this year and that is depth. Many of the sophomores and juniors that were expected to provide needed depth up front have opted out of the 2014 season; leaving Coach Joe with a small sideline – similar to the 1996 team that featured 18 players on the roster and were dubbed the “dirty dozen and a half”.

Lady and gents, make your pick.

SOR, SOR!…..

It’s time for Friday Night Lights again in the Emerald Forest and expectations are high for the team in Green.

Being a former “dirt eater”, big man, I understand and enjoy the fact that true football fans know that most of the games are won/lost in the trenches.

This should be evident this week as the Crusaders make their way south from Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City (confused yet?, I know I am). Early in the year, I think the Waves should control the line and their depth shouldn’t be a factor out of the gate.

Hang onto the pig and we’ll get the win!

Kyle Canup:
Hopefully this year the winner of the panel doesn’t come down to “legitimate” hay bale guessing game (Barry you can’t pay someone off again). The Waves look to have a new style of QB play after losing Lyle but luckily Mason Woody will be behind a stacked O-line. If I’m guessing right Coach Campbell will have a solid system in play and I’ve already heard great things about this preseason from the Waves. I don’t know as much about this time as I should but going with my gut and saying the Waves win 27-20.

Amber Johnson:
It’s hard to believe football time is rolling back around; the Greenwaves need to get a good jump on the start of the season. What better way to achieve that than a home opener. The short-handed waves will handle the visiting Crusaders. Give me Midway with the “W”.

Barry Narramore:
Good Lord I been waiting all summer for this night. The Greenwaves open this season with Tri-Cities Christian. The Green team will have a new QB and a new running back. There will be some questions answered Friday night at these positions but either way that big senior line will carry the Waves through. Midway by 2 touchdowns! Go Big Green!!!!!!!!

Michael Rose:
Midway in a close one.

Steven Sears:
I had the opportunity to watch Midway play last Friday at the jamboree at Oliver Springs. Although a lot of the starters were sidelined to prevent further injuries, I saw a few positives last Friday. The biggest positive I saw was the teams speed. It was also nice seeing yards after contact and receptions. I’m excited to see what these guys can do with limited numbers. Playing smart, penalty free football will be key for this years team. Especially stupid penalties! I’m taking Midway in this weeks matchup against Tri-Cities Christian. Good luck and I’m looking forward to an exciting season. Midway 35 Tri-Cities Christian 21
