Midway High hit the road Friday night to the home of the country’s smallest post office – Sunbright. I’m not sure that statement is true (actually, I’m confident it is completely false) but like much of the content on SORSN, we makeup or embellish frequently what we don’t know. What is true is the Green Wave made the trip up highway 27 looking for a pair of wins but came away with just one. The Lady Wave fell to the unbeaten Lady Tigers while the Wave blew out Sunbright for a much-needed win.
The girls game was a solid battle between two good teams but it would be Sunbright’s defense and press that ultimately broke the game away and helped them to a 52-44 win over the Lady Wave. The Lady Tigers were determined to have someone other than Kyleigh Cawood score and handle the ball. They often double teamed and denied entry passes to Cawood most of the game. A strategy that proved to be successful and the Lady Tigers move to 5-0 on the season and the Lady Wave 3-3.
In the boys game, the Wave (2-3) rolled into Sunbright on 3 straight losses (Sweetwater, Tellico, Oliver Springs) to start the regular season and was desperate for a win. They found it. The team did not look car-sick at all after the trip up the mountain (unlike half of the parents) and they jumped out early on the Tigers, leading 19-2 after 5 minutes of play. Sunbright would settle down and connect on some shots to close out the first with Midway leading 22-10. But then the big man Landon “Bones” Easter checked into the game and he was on fire, connecting on 3 straight shots to put Midway firmly in the lead at the half 47-24. Dalton Cowell led the offense in the first half. He was the pure definition of what it means to be in the zone, knocking down 4 from behind the arc and a couple more from the floor to score 16 first-half points. Freshmen Cooper Queener added an And 1 and Dawson Bucker sunk a pair from the line to give Midway 7 players in the scoring column in the first half.
Solid, balanced scoring continued in the third quarter for the Wave and they would go on to win 81-47.
Dalton Cowell 16 points, Brennan Reed 14, Evan Lemons 12, Landon Easter 10.
Midway will host Wartburg on Tuesday, December 5th.
