McClure attempts dunk over OS

MHS Basketball: A Tale of Two Games

After the Christmas break, MHS basketball had two contrasting games that kept fans in need of more eggnog. On January 3rd, Midway traveled to Scott County to kick off the second half of the season. Unfortunately, both the Lady Wave and the Wave had a rough night, leaving with a pair of losses. The Lady Wave fell 49-55, while the boys, despite being out-rebounded, turning the ball over more, and struggling to make shots, had a chance to win in the final seconds but ultimately came up short with a final score of 61-63.

Fast forward to January 7th, and Midway was on the road again, this time to Oliver Springs High…eh, Academy. Fans who braved the 3.5-mile hike from the parking lot to the gym were treated to a show as the Lady Wave and Green Wave took out their frustrations on the Bobcats. The Lady Wave triumphed 57-38, and the Wave dominated with a 77-54 victory.

Girls Game

The Lady Wave (8-4) came out swinging and took an early lead. Senior Abbie Parks was on fire in the opening quarter, sinking a pair of threes and another shot from the floor for 8 points in the opening minutes. Senior Addie Armes joined the three-point party in the second quarter, knocking down a pair of her own. The Lady Wave took a commanding 33-17 lead into halftime.

The Lady Bobcats tried to rally in the third quarter, scoring 14 points, but the Lady Wave continued to build on their lead with contributions from five different players. “The Kid” Kyleigh Cawood sealed the deal in the fourth quarter, going 5 of 6 from the free-throw line. The Lady Wave secured the win, 57-38.

Cawood finished with 18 points and 8 assists. Parks added 14 points, and Armes grabbed 7 rebounds to go along with her 12 points.

Boys Game

The Wave (7-5) looked like a completely different team from their previous game. Midway jumped out to an early lead, thanks largely to Brennan Reed’s 10 points in the opening quarter. In total, five GreenWave players got on the scoreboard in the first quarter, and the team led 21-4 after just 8 minutes of play.

The Oliver Springs offense found its rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 23 points, but they couldn’t stop the Wave. Seven different GreenWave players scored in the second quarter, thanks to Reed’s drive-and-dish plays. Midway took a 45-27 lead into halftime.

The second half belonged to Midway’s Dalton Cowell. The senior torched OS for 21 points in the second half, finishing with a game-high 30. Midway cruised to a 77-54 victory.

Cowell also pulled in 19 rebounds to go along with his 30 points. Reed had an all-around game with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Peyton Steele added 8 points, and Wyatt McClure contributed 7 points and 10 rebounds.
