Sweetwater’s History Meets Midway’s Determination in Showdown

What was once a thriving town built around the hosiery mill, Sweetwater has since transformed into an antique shop mecca. On Thursday, the Midway Green Wave traveled to the Roundhouse—home to the Sweetwater Wildcats and legends like Kippy Brown and Aaron Green. The script was flipped from their previous meeting just before Thanksgiving. Back then, the Lady Wave defeated the Lady Cats 71-60, but on Sweetwater’s home court, they lost 51-55. Meanwhile, the Midway boys fell 51-54 at Ruff Arena in the first matchup, but rebounded with a 63-48 victory on Sweetwater’s home court.

Girls Game

It was the Midway Lady Wave’s second game without senior guard Abby Parks, and it showed. The absence of Parks was felt on both ends of the court as Midway struggled to find rhythm. Kyleigh Cawood came out hot, scoring 10 of the Lady Wave’s 15 first-quarter points. Addie Armes also stepped up, contributing on both offense and defense in Parks’ absence. Despite their efforts, it wasn’t enough to keep pace with Sweetwater.

Coach Smith rotated players in search of a spark, but Sweetwater controlled the first half, taking an 11-point lead into the break.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair. Despite trailing by double digits in the fourth, the Lady Wave never lost their confidence. They chipped away at the lead, and a late steal by Cloa Copeland—who took it all the way for a lay-up—pulled Midway within 2 points. Moments later, Jarnigan sank both free throws to tie the game. But Sweetwater responded quickly, capitalizing on a series of back-to-back poor possessions from the Lady Wave to rebuild their lead and seal the win.

Boys Game

Intense. Fast. These were the two adjectives missing from Midway’s first matchup with Sweetwater. But on Thursday, the Green Wave brought the energy, showing the kind of intense defense and fast-paced play they’ve become known for. Cooper Queener and Brady Arndts each knocked down a three-pointer in the opening quarter, while Wyatt McClure dominated the paint with 5 first-quarter points.

McClure continued his dominant performance, adding 12 points in the second quarter, including 2 treys, as Midway started to pull away.

In the second half, Arndts put on a shooting clinic, knocking down five three-pointers with ease. It was as if he was tossing rocks into the water at the Duck Park. His shooting barrage helped Midway stretch their lead and seal a 63-48 victory.
